Janet Brownell
Producer and Screenwriter
Janet Brownell grew up in Los Angeles. She graduated from U.C. Berkeley
and had an illustrious six-week post-graduate experience in law school.
After dropping out of law school, she took a hard look at her life. It
was then she decided to pursue a career in television and film.
Janet’s first job in the ‘biz’ was as a receptionist in the personnel
office at CBS Television. It was in this position she discovered she
was not a ‘people person.’ Over five years she went from the personnel
office, to a secretarial position in Broadcast Standards, to becoming a
script reader at Columbia Pictures. Finally, she secured a low-level
development position in the studio’s television division. While sitting
across from a writer one afternoon, she thought to herself, “I could be as
mediocre as you are and make a living.” And her writing career began.
Janet wrote a spec script and got an agent. Her first job writing was a
year stint on Days of Our Lives. After that first year, she quit – only to
be told by the Days head writer, “you will NEVER work in daytime again.”
Thankfully, she hasn’t. (See Filmography.)
